Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei Reveal Designs for 2012 Serpentine Pavilion.

VitraHaus by Herzog & de Meuron

From the de Young Museum’s Observation Tower.

The original: Herzog & de Meuron’s Dominus Winery in Napa Valley, California (1997). For other examples of this building method (reinforced concrete and gabion cladding on steel tube frame supporting baskets filled with rocks), read on here.

Here’s another (and a personal favorite, especially considering the interior is so light): House 9×9 by Titus Bernhard Architekten (Germany, 2003).

Things that look like other things: Rock Office by a21 Studio (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, 2007). And yes, there IS more than one building in the world whose exterior walls are composed of rocks in cages.

Herzog & de Meuron’s controversial concert hall in Hamburg, the Elbphilharmonie, is nearing completion. What’s the trouble, you wonder? A grossly inflated budget — some estimates put the number at €323 million – and a fear that the fancy new cultural center with trash the city’s “scruffy, homegrown” scene.

Not everyone gets along as well as Herzog & de Meuron.* Sometimes architect teams break up. Sometimes they get more famous. Sometimes they get divorced. And sometimes, they fade into total obscurity.

*Did you know they went to kindergarten together!?
